Short, loose, and uncomfortable belt lock
Item quality is good and the focus olive color is genuinely attractive. The fabric feels durable, the stitching is clean, and overall it gives the impression of a well-constructed pair of shorts. However, the moment you put them on, a few design issues become very noticeable. The length is unexpectedly short, almost as if the cut stops earlier than what most people would expect from a pair of shorts in this style. At the same time, the fit around the waist and leg openings is surprisingly loose. This mix of being short yet loose creates an awkward silhouette, making the proportions feel unbalanced. Instead of looking intentionally relaxed or intentionally fitted, the shorts sit somewhere in between, which takes away from the clean, confident look expected from adidas—especially under their Equipment label.
The belt feature, in theory, could have added something useful to the design. It could have provided an adjustable fit or given the shorts a bit of a technical, utilitarian edge. But the execution falls short. The belt holder—made of plastic—is the main issue. It feels cheap to the touch, it presses uncomfortably against the body during movement or when sitting, and visually it does not match the otherwise solid feel of the garment. It interrupts the clean look of the shorts, drawing attention in a way that feels unintended and unrefined. A metal loop, a reinforced fabric loop, or even a sturdier molded component would have elevated the design and removed the discomfort that the current plastic piece creates.
What makes this flaw more noticeable is the fact that these shorts are part of the adidas Equipment line. The Equipment series holds a special place in the brand’s history. Throughout the 90s, it represented a high standard of design, durability, and identity. The line was known for strong silhouettes, carefully thought-out details, functional elements, and an unmistakable aesthetic that appealed to people who appreciate archival sportswear and retro outdoor-inspired gear. When something carries the Equipment label today, people naturally expect it to respect that heritage.
Because of that, these shorts feel like a missed opportunity. The proportions don’t fully align with classic Equipment sensibilities, which typically featured a more defined structure and a balanced relationship between form and function. Rather than feeling inspired by the confident shapes of the 90s, the shorts seem unsure of their identity—too short to be traditional, too loose to be streamlined, not structured enough to be technical, and not relaxed enough to feel intentionally oversized. The end result falls into an ambiguous area, where the design neither commits to a modern reinterpretation nor embraces the original style philosophy.
The details, which often define the Equipment line, also feel underdeveloped. In older and more authentic Equipment pieces, hardware choices, trims, tag placements, and functional components were used to reinforce the premium feel. A belt system, especially one placed so prominently, should reflect that same level of care. Instead, the plastic belt holder feels like a cost-cutting decision rather than a design-driven one. This small detail reduces the overall impression and makes the shorts feel less refined than they should.
For people who love 90s style and specifically seek out Equipment products, these kinds of details matter. They look for thoughtful design decisions, sturdy components, and silhouettes that reflect the boldness and practicality of the era. The focus olive color successfully captures part of that rugged, outdoor-ready aesthetic, but color alone can’t carry the entire identity of the piece. The construction must match the spirit of the line.
The shorts clearly had strong potential. The fabric quality is good, the stitching is done well, and the color is excellent. All the foundational elements are there. But the proportions and the belt implementation work against the strengths of the garment. The shorts would benefit greatly from a slightly longer inseam, a fit that feels more intentional—whether relaxed or structured—and a redesigned belt system that avoids the distracting plastic component.
In summary, they are not bad shorts. The quality is good, the color is stylish, and the overall concept fits well within what people expect from adidas. But for the Equipment series, expectations are higher. Fans of 90s sportswear and archival design anticipate a stronger follow-through on the details, proportions, and finishing touches. As they stand now, the shorts feel like a product that reached “acceptable” when it had the potential to reach “exceptional.” A few refinements—particularly in fit and hardware—would make a major difference and bring the piece closer to the standard that the Equipment line deserves.
